GOLD RIVER, Calif. — November 1, 2026. With the fall Chinook salmon season underway in the American River region, families and nature enthusiasts may be interested in the American River Hatchery near Nimbus Dam in Gold River.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) identifies the hatchery at 2101 Nimbus Road, Gold River, CA 95670. Its official page describes fish-rearing work and a nearby nature trail where visitors can learn about the river environment and observe wildlife.
Fall and winter fish migrations
The regional destination organization Visit Rancho Cordova describes the Chinook salmon spawning period in fall and hatchery operations typically occurring from the beginning of November through mid-December. Steelhead activity follows during winter. Those are usual seasonal patterns, not a promise that fish will be visible at a specified hour.
Visitor access requires verification
CDFW’s hatchery page lists office hours of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., while separate visitor-center facilities can have different access rules. Parts of Nimbus Fish Hatchery were temporarily closed to public access during 2025. Accordingly, visitors should confirm which viewing areas, parking facilities and educational spaces are actually open before traveling in November 2026.
The CDFW page states that dogs must be leashed, bicycles are not permitted on hatchery grounds and public restrooms are not available at the American River Hatchery facility described there. Do not assume the trail allows the same activities as all other nearby parkland.
For current information, call (916) 358-2865 or email americanriver@wildlife.ca.gov. Respect posted closures and never enter fish-rearing facilities without permission.
